Chapter twenty-three

“Good job out there Nash,” Casper, my new team captain, said to me as we skated off of the ice after practice. I had spent the morning feeling sick to my stomach with nerves about my first day of practice with a new team. It had been a while since I had gone through the whole song-and-dance of moving to a new team because I’d been with the Sixers for so long. But all of the guys seemed like they were excited to have me out on the ice with them.

It also helped that there were other new players starting with me today. Mouse, an absolutely massive right-winger, had been with me through all of our orientation meetings over the past two weeks. So I had at least one person that I knew today and I stuck pretty close to him while everyone was getting ready earlier. I had found that, despite his hulking size, the guy moved over the ice like he was floating over it rather than skating on his blades. He was surprisingly nimble as fuck and had given the other players a run for their money, especially pissing off one of the younger players, another winger, who had spent the practice looking sullen as he tried to keep up.

“Thanks, man, I’m excited to be here,” I told Casper honestly. I was happy to be home with my family all of the time now, but it was also nice to be a part of growing and refining a team that was in desperate need of a refresh. The Sixers had found what formula worked with their team before I ever stepped onto their ice, and had stuck with it for as long as I had been on the team. The Stallions were still learning what worked and what didn’t. It filled me with a special kind of excitement to be a part of a team that was working toward greatness from basically scratch.

One of the players, a bigger guy that had kicked everyone’s ass as goalie during practice today, slid up to us and tapped gloves with Casper as he joined in on our conversation.

“Nash, this is Dutch, one of the best goalies you’ll ever get the honor of playing with.” Casper introduced us and I reached out to shake the guy’s hand as best as I could through our gloves and pads. After working out so hard, everyone’s scents were cloying around us, and Dutch’s was no different. It surprised me to find that his scent was on the sweeter side, mint chocolate with just a hint of something sharper. Looking at him, it was hard to bring his scent and his solemn demeanor together in my head. He just didn’t seem like the kind of guy who would have such a sweet scent.

“Nice to meet you,” I told him as the coaches called for us to get our asses off the ice and into the showers so that the Zamboni guy could smooth out all of the grooves and scratches that we had put into it during practice.
